Woods & Finishes: Karelian Birch

Karelian Birch burr is one of the most distinctive and rare in the world. Although birch is grown all over Finland, it’s the unique soils of the small area of Karelia that give it its beautiful grain. Recognised by Finnish craftsmen in the 18th century, the birch burr has been used for the world’s most covetable furniture ever since. Tightly controlled felling and the fact that it can only be harvested in mid-winter when the ground is frozen, make it a rare wood used for premium pieces of furniture, but it is also sustainable. As well as our standard finish, we also provide an antiqued finish, as well as our new natural finish which really shows the beauty of the burr.
